今日いつもの花屋さんで初めて店員さんと花以外の話をした。
彼女は細いフレームの眼鏡をかけ、麻のエプロンをつけ、長い髪を一つに束ねている。若いのか若くないのかはよくわからない。生まれた時から花屋の店員だったのかもしれない。とにかく彼女はその花屋の一部であり、その花屋は彼女の一部だった。
彼女が花を包みながら、控えめに「さっき蝉鳴いてましたよ。小さい声でしたけど」と言った。その声も小さかった。
私が店に入った時から彼女はこれを言おうと決めてたのだと思う。ひとつには、蝉によってもたらされた夏の訪れは間違いなく誰にとってもビッグニュースだから。そしてもうひとつには、彼女と私はもうそろそろ花以外の話をしてもいい頃合いだったから。彼女は小さな勇気でもって小さな声を置いた。
「夏ですねぇ」と私は言った。
だから七月四日はセミ記念日。
Today, at my usual flower shop, I had my first conversation with a sales clerk about something other than flowers.
She wore thin-framed glasses, a linen apron, and her long hair was tied up in a single bun. I’m not sure if she was young or not. She might have been a flower shop clerk since birth. Anyway, everything about her blended in as a part of the flower shop.
As she wrapped the flowers, she said modestly, “I heard the cicadas earlier, though they were very quiet” Her voices were also very quiet.
I think she had decided to say this when I walked in. For one thing, the arrival of summer with the cicadas was definitely big news for everyone. For another, it was time for her and I to talk about something other than flowers. She put down her little voice with a little courage.
“It’s summer,” I said.
So July 4th is Cicada Day.
